More Newcastle fun

Tonight I, Kirsten and Sebastian went bar-hopping... This is how Tyne looks at night. Famous sights to behold :)

The Millenium bridge not only opens and closes but its lighting changes color as well.

Here are a couple more pictures from South Shields and Tynemouth.

Looks like we were looking for some shells here. I can`t quite remember. Ah yeah, we had a competition which I won. I was the first to find a shell, even though it was broken ;)

Tynemouth Abbey (monastery and castle ruins) in the background!

We had a lab gathering on Wednesday (bad idea), but surprisingly most people looked quite healthy next day. I myself wasn`t able to sleep too well on that night, remember having some nightmares. No more beer for me! :) Unfortunately, on the next day I had SO MUCH WORK....

Some of my colleagues here at the NICR.

There are some of the first pictures I had taken during the first weekend after my arrival to Newcastle. That`s river Tyne.

The famous Millenium bridge that opens and closes every day to let ships pass.

I got myself a bike on the second day which, I think, was my best investment here so far. I learn a lot about the city by getting lost all the time.

Some other pictures from Newcastle

Last weekend we went to the coast, walked for more than 10 miles alltogether, but it was well worth it. Actually these pictures are chronologically in reverse order, so please forgive me :)

We saw at least 4 lighthouses on the way, as well as two windmills and some strange birds that we were not able to identify. The coastline of the North see is amazing: rocks here, golden sands there.. All kinds of wildlife and pretty rock formations in the see.

Martin, I and Kirsten (they`re both from Germany and sadly are going to leave soon.)

Surfing in January?! Why not... :))

People love to party in Newcastle. These are my colleagues and their friends.

RED KITE SAFARI

These pray (actually scavanger) birds were reintroduced to Gateshead in the last couple years. More than ninety birds have been released in to the wild and now they are breeding as well. We had a chance to see them in flight as well as perched on trees (with binoculars). A grown kite`s wing span reaches 6 feet, but the weight is only around 900 grams. Its also special because of its forked tail. A beautiful bird!

Something I saw in the downtown :))

''Duck pond'', actually a very beautiful park next to the University of Newcastle.

NICR: the institute where I work now!
